Opening Remarks by the Chairman, Dr. Festus Goziem Okubor, at the 2024 HUMAN DIGNITY DAY LECTURE of the UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION (UNAA) ASABA BRANCH
Protocols and appreciation.
It is with great honour and a deep sense of purpose that I welcome you all to this important gathering focused on a topic that is coined out of our alma mater’s motto “To restore the dignity of man”. It resonates at the very heart of our collective aspirations: Human Dignity as a Panacea for Socio-Economic Development in Nigeria.
Today, we come together at a critical juncture in our nation’s journey. Nigeria, blessed with abundant natural resources and an indomitable spirit, faces socio-economic challenges that demand innovative solutions. As we navigate issues of insecurity, poverty, inequality, unemployment, and underdevelopment, we must recognize that the key to sustainable progress lies not merely in policies or programmes, but in prioritizing the inherent dignity of every Nigerian, as the founders of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka knew.
Human dignity — the recognition that every individual, irrespective of status, ethnicity, gender, or belief, deserves respect and opportunities—must be the cornerstone of our development agenda. When dignity is upheld, people are empowered to unleash their potential, communities are uplifted, and a nation is transformed.
This principle speaks directly to the foundation of equity, justice, and inclusivity. When we invest in education, healthcare, decent jobs, and social protection, we affirm dignity. When we address corruption, promote accountability, and create systems that work for all, we reaffirm the value of every Nigerian.
As we deliberate today, let us challenge ourselves to explore practical ways to integrate human dignity into our socio-economic strategies. Let us envision a Nigeria where every individual can thrive with pride and contribute meaningfully to our shared future.
Together, we can build a nation where dignity is not just a value but a lived reality—one that fosters unity, prosperity, and hope for generations to come.
Thank you for your time and dedication to this cause. I look forward to fruitful discussions and actionable outcomes.
Thank you.
